PLSA Announces new online forum

The Portsmouth & Langstone Sailing Association is pleased to announce the launch of it's new online discussion forum. This forum is available at http://forums.sailsite.co.uk/.

The forum is currently open to anyone who has an interest in the activities of the Portsmouth & Langstone Sailing Association and is aimed primarily at members of the 24 Clubs and Associations represented by the PLSA.

About the PLSA

The Association has close contact with the Queens Harbour Master, Portsmouth and negotiates moorings agreements with the Crown Estates Commission on behalf of member clubs. In Langstone Harbour the Association has representation on the Harbour Board Advisory Committee.

In addition to this the Association works closely with the other bodies to represent the interests of it's 24 member clubs and associations in a manor that co-exists with the environment.

Transfer to new ownership

Having managed and financed the Tudor website since it began as a personal project back in 1998, and then became the official club site at the beginning of 2000, the Executive Committee have told me that they have decided to take over both the management and cost of running the site. Another new site is in the process of development ready for the transfer to the new ownership.

To clarify the reasoning behind two new designs in such quick succession - the Executive Committee had requested new features, requiring a new design, and these were completed just prior to announcing the decision to take over the site.

The current site will continue to be available at http://tudorsc.aptanet.net/ for reference following the transfer. Those new features of the site that have been added - additional non-club news items, forums and the gallery will be, or have been moved and expanded as part of a new project at http://www.sailsite.co.uk/.

I wish the new webmaster all the best, and trust he will take good care of the site over the next 6 years.

Curry Night and Talk

All members are invited to attend the Monthly Curry Night and Talk on Astro-Navigation Wednesday 3rd December 2003 @ 20:00. John Jeffery will give a talk (starting at about 20:45) on Astro-Navigation and his experience as navigator on the televised voyage of the replica of Captain James Cook's ship Endeavour.
No charge is being made for his talk but John would appreciate a donation being made to his preferred charity the Royal Institute of Navigation. John will be using a presentation prepared on his laptop computer. Unfortunately he does not own a projector suitable for powerpoint presentations. Rather than the club having to hire a projector can anyone help by lending a projector for the evening. If so please let me know as soon as possible.

Website updates

You may have noticed a few updates to the site over the past couple of weeks. The race results are now as up to date as the information I have (there are a few missing and I will look into getting updated information to fill in the gaps). There is now an online gallery, so any photos of club events would be most welcome. Forums have been suggested on a number of occasions, and a trial was requested, so these are just awaiting Exec approval. A links page has also been added, hopefully keeping to a compact list of the key ones of interest, but if you know of something that may be worth adding let me know. Lastly, and of more interest to prospective members, I am still hoping to get copies of the New Members packs on line. When I get them they will be added tot he Membership page.

Comments Please...

I have a prototype new look for the Tudor website in development and would welcome some input from visitors to the site. What I am looking for is comments on:

  • how easy the text is to read
  • how easy it it to find the information you are looking for
  • whether the colour scheme appeals

etc.. It would be helpful if you could let me know what setup you are using to view the site when you make any comments (Windows 98, XP, Mac Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL, etc.).

Currently the content is pull straight from the live site so some pages may well be tweaked slightly when the new look is finalised. With the results now working again, and in the process of being checked and brought up to date, the next thing is a face lift and extension of the features and information on the site.

For those who are, or know, potential new members, I hope to have the New Members Packs available in PDF format (Adobe Acrobat) soon.

To take a look visit http://www.aptanet.com/tudorsc/

Do bear in mind that it is not finalised yet, but don't hold back on your comments. Visitors to the site seem to be a pretty quiet lot, and its nice to know that your dropping by and what you think - perhaps I should have a guest book!
